SHERIFF CARMINE MARCENO’S SEPTEMBER SAFETY & SECURITY TIP: SAFE DISPOSAL OF ELECTRONIC DEVICES
Today’s electronic devices perform incredible tasks. Many of us do our shopping and our banking online…we store personal and private information…we pay bills and transfer money.
While the conveniences are remarkable, these devices maintain extremely sensitive and personal information.
With the ongoing improvement of technology, many choose to upgrade their devices to newer models with advanced features…leaving little or no use for the “outdated” and “old” device.
Whether you choose to donate your used devices, sell them/trade them in, or simply give them to friends/family to use, it is critical to remember that these devices contain that sensitive information previously mentioned.
There are a number of ways to permanently erase data from your device…also known as sanitizing.
As each manufacturer and has their own methods of data erasure, and devices such as computers, laptops, tablets, smartphones, etc., have their own processes, it is extremely important to carefully review all steps necessary for device sanitization. When uncertain, have the device professionally erased/restored to factory settings.
Should you choose to discard your device, check local regulations regarding “e-waste” and the proper method of disposal. Remember…sanitize the device prior to discarding it!
