The five branches of CRU are Community Outreach, Community Policing, Crime Prevention, Construction Special Investigations and Animal Cruelty Task Force.

Crimes involving financial exploitation of any kind will NOT be tolerated. This is an unfortunate instance of a foreign national who defrauded an elderly resident to benefit off their trust for financial gain. This is a very serious crime with significant consequences, stated Sheriff Carmine Marceno. โ€œIโ€™m proud of the thorough investigation conducted by detectives, which resulted in a swift arrest, to ensure this criminal will no longer has the opportunity to prey on another innocent victim.โ€ On May 5th, Economic Crimes Unit detectives responded to a residence in Fort Myers referencing a Scheme to Defraud investigation.Upon speaking with the elderly victim, detectives learned they received a phone call from an unknown number in reference to a purchase they did not make. The male caller claimed to be a federal agent with the โ€œSocial Security Investigations Departmentโ€ and the victim was being investigated for โ€œmoney laundering.โ€The suspect instructed the victim to secure personal funds by withdrawing $30,000 from their bank as part of the money laundering investigation they were conducting. On May 3rd, the suspect coordinated a meeting with the victim to retrieve the funds, where the transaction was successfully completed. Several days later, the suspect attempted to scam the victim again, this time asking for $125,000. Due to growing suspicion, the victim contacted the Lee County Sheriffโ€™s Office and an investigation began immediately. Through advanced investigative techniques and working in conjunction with our Real Time Intelligence Center, the suspect was positively identified as twenty five year old, Omsai Kiran Vaddi. On Tuesday, May 6th, our Economic Crimes Unit, Narcotics Unit, and Tactical Narcotics Team conducted an operation to locate Vaddi. During the course of the operation, detectives successfully organized a meet-up with Vaddi at a predetermined location in Lee County. Around 6:00 PM, Tactical Narcotics Team detectives conducted a traffic stop on Vaddi, detaining him without incident. While speaking with Vaddi, Economic Crimes Unit detectives learned Vaddi is working for an individual based in India, who instructs him to meet with the victims to collect the fraudulent funds and deliver them to another location.Detectives arrested Vaddi for Criminal Conspiracy and Grand Theft on a victim 65 years or older. โ€œIf you ever feel you are a victim of a scam or fraudulent practices, we encourage you to contact us immediately. โ€œMy team is committed to using any and all resources necessary to ensure you feel safe and secure in the county you live in, stated Sheriff Carmine Marceno. Mark my words: Criminals who target and victimize vulnerable adults in this county WILL be sought and answer for their despicable actions.โ€ ... See MoreSee Less
