SHERIFF CARMINE MARCENO’S OCTOBER 2025 SAFETY & SECURITY TIP: FALL INTO GOOD HABITS

SHERIFF CARMINE MARCENO’S OCTOBER 2025 SAFETY & SECURITY TIP: FALL INTO GOOD HABITS

Even without falling temperatures, October in Florida brings a change in pace—shorter daylight hours, seasonal celebrations, and new safety considerations

Unfortunately, the change of season can also present new opportunities for criminal activity. With Halloween around the corner and the days getting darker earlier, it’s more important than ever to prioritize home and personal safety.

As the fall shopping season begins, so does an increase in package deliveries—and unfortunately, package thefts. Installing a video doorbell or directing packages to a secure pickup location can reduce the risk of “porch piracy.” Promptly retrieving packages and minimizing visible deliveries helps deter opportunistic theft.

October brings festive traditions like Halloween, but it also brings increased foot traffic in neighborhoods and an influx of unfamiliar visitors. While most are there for candy and costumes, it’s wise to stay vigilant.

Ensure walkways and porches are well-lit for trick-or-treaters and to discourage criminal activity. Avoid placing decorations in ways that block door locks, windows, or security cameras. Check that your surveillance systems are working properly before Halloween night.

Parents should accompany young children while trick-or-treating and encourage teens to travel in groups. Motorists should also drive with extra caution in residential areas during the evening hours, as many children wear dark costumes that may be difficult to see.

As we enjoy all that October has to offer—from football games to pumpkin patches to trick-or-treating—let’s not forget to prioritize our safety. By adopting small, steady habits, we can effectively safeguard our homes and neighborhoods.
