SHERIFF CARMINE MARCENO’S OCTOBER 2025 FRAUD ALERT: DON’T “FALL” FOR FRAUD

As October brings seasonal activities and preparations for the holidays, scammers and fraudsters ramp up their efforts to take advantage of unsuspecting residents. The Lee County Sheriff’s Office wants to remind everyone to stay alert and protect themselves from common scams that often spike this time of year.

Watch Out for These Scams:

Phishing and Impersonation: Fraudsters posing as government or utility officials may demand money or personal information. Remember, legitimate agencies won’t pressure you for immediate payment or sensitive data over the phone or email.

Charity Scams: Verify any charity before donating to avoid falling victim to fake organizations, especially during the giving season.

Online Shopping Scams: Shop only with trusted retailers and use secure payment methods to avoid counterfeit products or identity theft.

Tax Scams: Be wary of unsolicited calls or emails about unpaid taxes. Contact the IRS directly if in doubt.

Protect Yourself

Don’t share personal info unless you’re sure of the recipient’s identity.

Be cautious of urgent demands or threats.

Use strong passwords and monitor your financial accounts regularly.

Report suspicious activity to law enforcement immediately. If you suspect fraud or have been a victim, report it promptly to help protect yourself and others.
