SHERIFF CARMINE MARCENO’S DECEMBER 2025 FRAUD ALERT: TIS THE SEASON FOR HOLIDAY FRAUDS & SCAMS

Stay safe by shopping on trusted sites, being wary of “too good to be true” deals and verify donation requests, while also protecting your physical mail and being cautious of phishing links and urgent requests.
Online Shopping & Accounts
· Shop Securely: Stick to trusted retailers, look for “https://” in URLs, and avoid public Wi-Fi for purchases.
· Watch for Phishing: Be skeptical of urgent emails/texts about order issues or “account problems.” Always go directly to the official site to log in.
· Beware of Fake Sites: Check URLs for misspellings and avoid sites demanding payment via gift cards or wire transfers.
· Check Accounts Daily: Closely monitoring your accounts for suspicious activity.
In-Person Purchases
· Protect Your Cards: Use tap-to-pay or chip readers, cover your PIN, and check ATM/card readers for skimming devices. If a card terminal forces you to swipe instead of chip/tap, it might be compromised.
· Guard Your Mail: Shred sensitive documents
Donations & Offers
· Verify Charities: Confirm donation requests by looking up the charity’s official website directly, not through a link. LCSO will never solicit for donations.
· Too Good to Be True: Be highly suspicious of unbelievable deals or “you’ve won” offers.
· Don’t Fall for Urgency: Scammers use pressure tactics. Hang up on unexpected calls asking for money or personal info.
Report suspicious activity to Lee County Sheriff’s Office (239-477-1000) or to your local law enforcement agency.
