SHERIFF CARMINE MARCENO’S APRIL SAFETY & SECURITY TIP: ALL ABOARD for Boat Safety!

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office is committed to keeping paradise safe on the water. With some of the most beautiful waterways in Southwest Florida, Lee County offers incredible opportunities for boating—whether you’re cruising the back bays, exploring the Gulf, or island-hopping.

Our local waters include narrow channels, shallow flats, wildlife zones, and high-traffic boating corridors. Understanding the rules and preparing before you launch helps prevent accidents and ensures a safe, enjoyable day on the water for everyone.

Safe Boating Tips

Life Jackets: Ensure there are U.S. Coast Guard-approved personal flotation devices (PFDs) for each person on board. Children 6 and under should wear them at all times while the vessel is underway.

Sober Driving: Alcohol-related accidents are a leading cause of boating incidents. Always designate a sober operator.

Weather Awareness: Florida weather can change quickly. Check forecasts before heading out and return to shore immediately if lightning is observed.

Stay Focused: Avoid distractions such as mobile devices while operating your vessel.

Equipment Check: Make sure navigation lights, fire extinguishers, and sound-producing devices are in proper working condition.

Emergency Preparedness: File a float plan with a trusted contact and carry essentials like a first-aid kit, marine radio, and extra fresh water.
