SHERIFF CARMINE MARCENO’S AUGUST 2024 SAFETY & SECURITY TIP: SHOPPING CENTER/MALL SAFETY TIPS Malls and shopping centers are excellent places to make purchases of all kinds and, as a result, these locations tend to be well populated and teeming with activity. Shoppers migrate from store to store, occasionally stopping to eat or for a cup of coffee, and all too often pay little attention to the people around them and/or their surroundings. Shopping with young children complicates matters as we must closely monitor their whereabouts and behaviors despite carrying packages, trying on clothing, navigating the mall, etc. A number of my previous “Safety & Security Tips” address “situational awareness” and

SHERIFF CARMINE MARCENO’S AUGUST SAFETY & SECURITY TIP: SITUATIONAL AWARENESS IN A NEW COLLEGE ENVIRONMENT

SHERIFF CARMINE MARCENO’S AUGUST SAFETY & SECURITY TIP: SITUATIONAL AWARENESS IN A NEW COLLEGE ENVIRONMENT Leaving home, for college, can be an extraordinary and memorable experience. Teens have an opportunity to mature, to learn self-sufficiency and to enjoy a less restrictive environment. College campuses and the surrounding areas create opportunities for conscienceless and unscrupulous individuals to take advantage of your child’s lack of life experience and their vulnerability. It is a good time to remind your young adults about situational awareness and the consequences that can come about from alcohol and illicit drug consumption. Be certain that your child knows his/her limits…that they are aware of the amount of alcohol

SHERIFF CARMINE MARCENO’S JULY FRAUD ALERT: CORRUPTED iPHONE APPS While Smartphone companies work diligently to review new applications, even their best efforts have allowed fraudulent applications to be made available. In a recent Washington Post review, reporters indicated that roughly 2 percent of the 1,000 most popular iPhone applications were fraudulent or infected. Apple reportedly claimed to prevent over $1.5 billion in fraudulent transactions, however, market research shows that despite such efforts, app users have been defrauded out of approximately $48 million. These corrupt applications may be in the form of seemingly fun games, apps for trustworthy name-brand corporations, browsers or news applications. Some applications will steal personal information, will

SHERIFF CARMINE MARCENO’S MAY SAFETY & SECURITY TIP: CRIME PREVENTION AT THE WORKPLACE

SHERIFF CARMINE MARCENO’S MAY SAFETY & SECURITY TIP: CRIME PREVENTION AT THE WORKPLACE As many of us are returning to the workplace following a lengthy time away, I felt that this month’s “Safety & Security Tip” should remind everyone of the importance of workplace security.
