College campuses and the surrounding areas create opportunities for conscienceless and unscrupulous individuals to take advantage of your child’s lack of life experience and their vulnerability. It is a good time to remind your young adults about situational awareness and the consequences that can come about from alcohol and illicit drug consumption. SHERIFF CARMINE MARCENO’S JULY FRAUD ALERT: CORRUPTED iPHONE APPS While Smartphone companies work diligently to review new applications, even their best efforts have allowed fraudulent applications to be made available. In a recent Washington Post review, reporters indicated that roughly 2 percent of the 1,000 most popular iPhone applications were fraudulent or infected. Apple reportedly claimed to prevent over $1.5 billion in fraudulent transactions, however, market research shows that despite such efforts, app users have been defrauded out of approximately $48 million. These corrupt applications may be in the form of seemingly fun games, apps for trustworthy name-brand corporations, browsers or news applications. So do the scammers… The Federal Trade Commission has been inundated with complaints about summer rental scams. Here’s how they usually work: You see an ad online or via social media for an absolutely amazing looking summer rental opportunity. A beachfront residence, a cabin on the lake…exactly what you have been daydreaming about while putting in those long hours at work. The price…you can’t beat it! The ad stipulates that you must send or wire funds to reserve your slice of paradise.
