As October brings slightly cooler evenings, Halloween activities, and more time spent outdoors, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind residents of a few simple ways to stay safe and help protect our community.

Halloween Safety

Halloween is a fun time for families, but it also brings increased pedestrian activity and more children out after dark. Please keep these tips in mind:

· Drivers should slow down and remain especially alert in residential neighborhoods.

· Watch carefully for children crossing streets, driveways, and parking areas.

· Use flashlights, reflective clothing, or reflective accessories when walking after dark.

· Parents and guardians should make sure children know how to safely cross streets and stay with their group.

· Check Halloween treats before allowing children to eat them.

Protect Your Home

October is also a good time to take a few minutes to review your home security:

· Lock all doors and windows when leaving your home or going to bed.

· Keep garage doors closed when not in use.

· Avoid leaving spare keys in obvious locations.

· Keep outdoor areas and entrances well-lit.

· If traveling, ask a trusted neighbor to keep an eye on your home and collect mail or packages.

· Avoid posting detailed vacation plans or extended absences on social media.

See Something? Say Something.

Everyone plays a role in keeping our community safe. Residents are encouraged to remain aware of their surroundings and report suspicious activity.

· Do not confront or attempt to investigate suspicious individuals yourself.

· If you see something that appears unusual or concerning, make note of important details such as location, time, descriptions, and vehicle information when it is safe to do so.

· Call 911 for emergencies or crimes in progress.

· Use LCSO’s non-emergency number 239-477-1000 for situations that do not require an immediate response.

A Safe October for Everyone

A safe community starts with residents looking out for one another. Taking a few extra minutes to secure your home and vehicle, staying alert while driving, and practicing good Halloween safety can make a meaningful difference.

From all of us at the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, we wish you and your family a safe, happy, and enjoyable October!
