Thanksgiving is a time for family, friends, travel, and celebration. With more people on the roads, busy stores, and crowded gatherings, it is important to take a few simple precautions to keep yourself and your loved ones safe.

Stay Safe on the Road

Plan your route before leaving and allow extra travel time. While driving, keep a safe following distance and adjust your speed for weather and traffic conditions.

Avoid distracted driving. Put your phone away while driving. Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

If you become tired while driving, stop somewhere safe and take a break.

Protect Your Home

Secure your home, even when leaving for a short period. Lock doors and windows.

Use outdoor lighting around entrances and other areas around your home. Lighting is a criminal deterrent and increases natural surveillance!

If you plan to travel for the holidays, avoid publicly announcing travel plans or that your home will be unattended. Ask a trusted neighbor to keep an eye on your property if you plan to be away.

Stay Alert While Shopping

Keep wallets, phones, and other valuables secure in crowded stores. Do not leave valuables in the shopping cart or in the car. Avoid displaying large amounts of cash.

Be aware of your surroundings when entering and leaving stores or parking areas. Park in well-lit areas and have your keys ready before approaching your vehicle.
