The Lee County Sheriff’s Office reminds you to travel responsibly on this 4th of July weekend. Here are practical ways to stay safe when using ridesharing apps during July 4th celebrations.
Plan Your Ride Before the Fireworks Begin
Due to the high activity that rideshare apps experience on a holiday, book your ride early (if possible). Prices may surge throughout the day, and ride availability may be limited. Have a transportation plan before the fun begins to try and avoid long waits. Plan to bring a portable phone charger to keep the app going!
Wait in a Safe, Well-Lit Area
Avoid waiting for pickup in isolated areas. Did you know lighting is the number one criminal deterrent? Find a well-lit pickup zone. Pair good lighting with the buddy system. Wait with a friend or stay in a public area.
Always Verify the Vehicle and Driver
Before getting into a rideshare vehicle, compare the car information to the information in the app. This includes the license plate, the make/model of the car, and the driver’s information. If you think the ride could be yours, ask who they are picking up and wait for them to say your name.
Share Your Trip in Real Time
Most rideshare apps allow riders to send details to trusted contacts. Pick a trusted contact to send the details of your ride. Your contact may see the driver’s information, car details, and GPS route.
Stay Aware During the Ride
Once you’re in the car, you should remain aware. Avoid falling asleep or being distracted. Follow the route on your phone. If your gut tells you something is wrong, trust it. You can ask to stop in a safe public area and contact law enforcement.
