The Lee County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about an increase in phone calls, text messages, and emails claiming that your bank account, Social Security number, or online account has been compromised.
Scammers often create a sense of urgency by saying:
“Your account has been locked.”
“Suspicious activity has been detected.”
“You must verify your information immediately.”
“A warrant has been issued for your arrest.”
Their goal is to trick you into providing personal information, banking details, passwords, or payment through gift cards, cryptocurrency, or money transfer apps.
Protect Yourself:
• Never provide personal or financial information to unsolicited callers.
• Hang up and contact the company directly using a verified phone number.
• Do not click on links in unexpected emails or text messages.
• Enable multi-factor authentication on important accounts.
• Be cautious of pressure tactics that demand immediate action.
Remember: Legitimate government agencies, banks, and law enforcement will never demand payment by gift card, cryptocurrency, or wire transfer.
If you believe you have been targeted by a scam, report it to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office (239)477-1000 and your financial institution immediately.
