On Sunday, May 17, 2020, Lee County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a residence on 23rd Street Southwest in Lehigh Acres in reference to a medical assistance call.

Upon arrival, deputies discovered a 23-month-old female with life-threatening injuries.  The child was immediately taken to Golisano Children’s Hospital and subsequently med-flighted to Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg.

Due to the nature of the incident, detectives with the Special Victim’s Unit responded and assumed the investigation.

“I am outraged and saddened to report that another young child is fighting for their life as a result of physical abuse,” stated Sheriff Carmine Marceno. “As always, our detectives will work around the clock with the State Attorney’s Office to bring these despicable criminals to justice.”

Detectives learned that the child’s condition was not consistent with accidental injuries. As a result, detectives began investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. The investigation revealed that while in the care of Yannier Velazquez-Orjeda, the victim sustained several severe injuries.

At this time, the child is reported to be in critical condition.

Detectives arrested and charged Yannier Velazquez-Orjeda (DOB 02/07/1984), with Aggravated Child Abuse.
