Arrest made in Fort Myers roadway incident
On November 1, 2020, deputies responded to a shooting that happened on South Tamiami Trail and Sanibel Road in Fort Myers.
The victim was driving with his wife and 5-year-old child from dinner when an unknown suspect in a silver car shot at his vehicle.
According to the victim, the suspect drove behind him at a traffic light and began honking his horn multiple times. The victim changed lanes to let the suspect pass. As the suspect’s car approached the victim’s, the suspect pointed a black gun from his window and fired a single round before speeding off.
Fearing for his family’s safety, the victim immediately reported the incident.
“I’m relieved that this family was not injured,” stated Sheriff Carmine Marceno. “Our residents and visitors deserve to feel safe when driving on our roadways.”
The Lee County Sheriff’s Violent Crimes Unit assumed the investigation. Utilizing analytical research from the Real Time Intelligence Center (RTIC), coupled with patrol-led intelligence, detectives were able to track down the vehicle and possible suspect known as Jonathan Blank (07/13/1995).
Blank was arrested by the Collier County Sheriff’s Office later that day for several counts of shooting into a vehicle, aggravated assault, and discharging a firearm from a vehicle.
“Our Real Time Intelligence Center, detectives, and patrol division immediately went to work to find this suspect,” stated Sheriff Carmine Marceno. “Blank’s reckless and dangerous behavior landed him in jail."
Lee County Sheriff’s Office detectives coordinated investigative efforts with the Collier County Sheriff’s Office. A warrant for Blank’s arrest was authored and approved. Blank was charged with Shooting a Missile into an occupied Conveyance, two counts of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, and Discharging a Firearm from a Vehicle.
Blank is currently in custody in the Collier County Jail.
