Corrections Deputy of the Year 2019 - Porter

Corrections Deputy of the Year 2019

On December 23, 2018, just after midnight, Deputy Andrew Porter was driving on 5th Avenue in the area of the Lighthouse Inn on Ft. Myers Beach. While driving, he observed two Lee County Sheriff's Office deputies attempting to restrain an individual who had been in a physical altercation. Without hesitation, Deputy Porter stopped his vehicle and responded to the scene where he identified himself as a deputy with the Sheriff's Office, and began to render assistance.

Deputy Porter assisted in control of the crowd, while the officers were attempting to handcuff the individual. After the individual was detained and removed a security officer of the Lighthouse Inn identified a second individual involved in the altercation who turned and fled the scene. Deputy Porter recognized that Deputy Torres was attempting to apprehend the individual without assistance, so without hesitation Deputy Porter joined in the foot pursuit and the individual was ultimately apprehended. Deputy Porter again provided crowd control while the second individual was handcuffed and escorted back to the patrol vehicle. Due to the quick actions taken and assistance provided by Deputy Porter, both individuals were arrested without further incident. Deputy Porter's selfless actions are a reflection of his dedication to the Lee County Sheriff's Office.
