Press Release

Friday, November 20, 2009

The Lee County Sheriff's Office Traffic Unit provides the information below in continuing efforts to increase traffic safety awareness and to emphasize the importance of obeying traffic laws to reduce traffic crashes, injuries and death on Lee County roads.

Monday, November 23, 2009, the Traffic Unit will target at least one of the following three locations for enforcement:

  1. Hickory Boulevard, Bonita Springs
  2. Diplomat Parkway, Cape Coral
  3. Summerlin Road, Fort Myers

Locations are selected based upon high incidents of crashes, traffic surveys and citizen complaints.

The Sheriff’s Office is committed to promoting traffic safety and enforcing the law. By focusing on violations such as red light running, speeding, DUI, and others, motorists become more alert and are encouraged to obey traffic laws. The Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit and District Patrol Deputies enforce our traffic laws each day by issuing citations and warnings. Preliminary results from their cumulative activity yesterday are as follows:

Citations Issued: 145
Written Warnings Issued: 227

Citizens can help enforce traffic laws.  Call 9-1-1 if you observe a drunk or impaired driver on Lee County roadways.  If your 9-1-1 call results in the arrest of a motorist for DUI (Driving Under the Influence) you may be eligible for a $100.00 reward through the Mobile Eyes Program.  Call 239-477-1000 for non-emergencies.

This traffic enforcement advisory is available here each day.

Fasten your seat belts, be courteous to drivers and pedestrians and together we can reduce traffic related fatalities, injuries and property damage.

-- Traffic Safety Tip of the Week: The days leading up to Thanksgiving Day are filled with motorists headed out to grab groceries and supplies. Friends and families will then take to Lee County roads to enjoy the dinners and other festivities. Don’t let this busy time cause you to become lax in your attention to driving and traffic safety. And, as always, remember to "buckle up"; seat belts save lives!
