Press Release

Friday, May 16, 2008

The Lee County Sheriff's Office Traffic Unit provides the information below in continuing efforts to increase traffic safety awareness and to emphasize the importance of obeying traffic laws to reduce traffic crashes, injuries and death on Lee County roads.

Monday, May 19, 2008, the Traffic Unit will target at least one of the following three locations for enforcement:

  1. Ben Hill Griffin Parkway & Alico Road, Fort Myers
  2. Ben C. Pratt Six-Mile Cypress Parkway & U.S. 41, Fort Myers
  3. Rosemary Drive, Bonita Springs

Locations are selected based upon high incidents of crashes, traffic surveys and citizen complaints.

The Sheriff’s Office is committed to promoting traffic safety and enforcing the law. By focusing on violations such as red light running, speeding, DUI, and others, motorists become more alert and are encouraged to obey traffic laws. The Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit and District Patrol Deputies enforce our traffic laws each day by issuing citations and warnings. Preliminary results from their cumulative activity yesterday are as follows:

Citations Issued: 135
Written Warnings Issued: 147

Citizens can help enforce traffic laws.  Call 9-1-1 if you observe a drunk or impaired driver on Lee County roadways.  If your 9-1-1 call results in the arrest of a motorist for DUI (Driving Under the Influence) you may be eligible for a $100.00 reward through the Mobile Eyes Program.  Call 239-477-1000 for non-emergencies.

This traffic enforcement advisory is available here each day.

Fasten your seat belts, be courteous to drivers and pedestrians and together we can reduce traffic related fatalities, injuries and property damage.

-- Traffic Safety Tip of the Week: In Florida, the law requires all front seat occupants, no matter their age, to buckle-up. Anyone under 18 must be properly restrained in the front or back seat. The "Click It or Ticket" education and enforcement wave begins May 17th and runs through June the 1st. Be sure to fasten your seat belts and make it a life-long, life-saving habit.
