Lee County Sheriff's Office Hosts Homeland Security Maritime Training Maneuvers

This week, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office is conducting waterborne training exercises and maneuvers in different location off the coast of Lee County. These exercises are in keeping with our Homeland Security Role and responsibilities as dictated by the Department of Homeland Security.

For this week’s maneuvers, the Lee County Sheriff's Office has again been selected to be the Host Trainer for Maritime Tactical Operations /Armed Ship Course. This class has been conducted in Lee County for many years, with Agencies coming from all across the United States and other countries.

This year the participants from Florida are Leon County, Wakulla County, Palm Beach County, Florida Wildlife Commission (FWC), United States Coast Guard and the Lee County Sheriff's Office.

Outside the United States are participants from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the Republic of Montenegro's SWAT Team (SAJ Team) and members of Montenegro's Regional Center for Divers and Underwater de-mining group. This last group is part of the U.S. Department of Justice, International Criminal Investigative Training Assistance Program (ICITAP).

This class has been designed to address the needs for the emerging concerns and issues of the maritime community along with the Department of Homeland Security. This training covers cutting edge Maritime / Armed Ship Boarding Tactics, water safety and survival techniques, overturned vessel / helicopter egress, low and high free board boarding, combat swimming, intelligence gathering and mission planning.

The training can be easily transformed to meet some of the needs of an all hazards approach, when dealing with natural or man-made disasters. The success of this program is due to the many partnerships of local, state, federal and foreign agencies. The Lee County Sheriff's Office is "Proud To Serve" as the host for such an event.
