Major Gene Sims was born and raised in Lee County, Florida where he began his law enforcement career with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office in April 1979, as a Special Deputy (Auxiliary Deputy). It was not long before he was bitten by the law enforcement bug and in January 1980 began his full time career. He began as a Deputy Sheriff and has risen through the ranks to his current rank of Major. He has served and held command positions in the agency’s Patrol, Administration, and Special Operations Bureaus. Major Sims currently serves as the Commanding Officer of the Special Operations Bureau.
Major Sims holds an Associates Degree in Criminal Justice, a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Management, and a Masters Degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Public Administration. He has been a high liability adjunct instructor for the Southwest Florida Public Service Academy for the past 27 years; currently serving as the Range master, overseeing the firearms program. He also serves as the Chairman of the Florida Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission Region Ten Training Council.
Major Sims graduated from the FBI National Academy, 201st session, June, 2000. He is an active member of the Florida Chapter serving as an Area Representative under the Tampa Region. His NA experiences, friendships, and membership are priceless and will continue long after retirement.
