Grow House Goes Up in Flames; Green Thumb Arrested

On Tuesday, December 04, 2012, at 6:00 a.m., the Lee County Sheriff’s Office received an information call about a house fire. The incident occurred at 4305 13th Street S.W. in Lehigh Acres, FL. The Lehigh Acres Fire Department had responded to the residence and found what was believed to be marijuana plants inside. Deputies were dispatched to the scene.

Due to the nature of the incident, detectives with the Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Unit were assigned to investigate. Detectives discovered 168 plants inside the residence with a street value estimated at $336,000 dollars. The State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the blaze. As a result, Richard Lee Smegal Jr., DOB 02/26/62, of (address here) with charges of Cultivation of Marijuana, Felony Possession of Paraphernalia and Trafficking Marijuana. The investigation continues and additional charges are pending.
