Original Release 2/29/12:

Crystal Methamphetamine Discovered at Pine Manor Home
Wednesday, February 29, 2012

On Wednesday, February 29, 2012, at 12:20 p.m., a deputy with the Lee County Sheriff's Office responded to the Pine Manor neighborhood in reference to a call stating there was a man in the area with a gun. As the deputy patrolled the neighborhood, he observed two men as they attempted to conceal themselves behind a duplex at the intersection of Eighth Avenue and Palm Drive.

The responding deputy spoke with the men and discovered one to be in possession of a handgun, crack cocaine and powdered cocaine. While speaking with the men, the deputy discovered plastic bags hanging from a fence that appeared to have a milky chemical within them. Due to his training and experience, he recognized this was a possible methamphetamine operation. Further investigation revealed a backpack with additional meth-making paraphernalia including water bottles containing apparent chemical substances causing them to be under intense pressure. Additional deputies responded to establish a perimeter and evacuate nearby homes due to the discovery of the chemicals.

The Fort Myers Fire Department Hazmat Team responded to ensure the building was safe enough to enter. Members of the SW Florida Regional Bomb Squad depressurized the containers so members of the Lee County Sheriff's Office Narcotics Unit could conduct testing and continue their investigation. The substances tested positive for crystal methamphetamine.

The investigation is ongoing with arrests pending.
