Investigators: Death Does Not Appear Traffic-Related
Friday, August 15, 2014

Investigators with the Lee County Sheriff's Office say a Fort Myers man who crashed his car earlier today likely didn't die because of the crash.

Shortly before Noon, deputies were called to a single vehicle crash at the intersection of Fowler Street and Page Field Commons Drive.  The caller stated that the driver of the vehicle was possibly deceased.

Due to the nature of the crash, investigators with the Lee County Sheriff's Office Traffic Homicide Unit assumed the investigation.

The investigation shows that a 2011 Hyundai was travelling southbound on Fowler Street and was crossing the intersection of Page Field Commons Drive.  The driver suffered what appears to be a medical event that caused his vehicle to exit the roadway and strike a roadway sign.

The driver was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

Two friends of the victim were following him in another vehicle and witnessed the crash.  The friends notified investigators that the victim was suffering from stage 4 liver cancer.

There were no injuries to the victim consistent with a vehicle crash.

The victim is identified as Stanley Huntington (DOB 5-23-46) of 8745 Fordham Street, Fort Myers.

The investigation continues.
