(Initial press release from March 2, 2014   5:52 a.m.)

Detectives with the Lee County Sheriff's Office Major Crimes Unit are working a deputy involved shooting at the Pilot located at 6050 Plaza Drive.

At approximately 3:00 a.m. on Sunday, March 2, 2014, deputies were checking out a possible stolen vehicle at one of the pumps.  As a female approached the vehicle, deputies attempted to make contact.  At that time, the female stepped away and the male seated in the driver seat rammed two squad cars in an attempt to get away.  The subject raced forward toward a deputy who had approached from the front, nearly running him over. Deputies were forced to engage the subject, who was struck once by gunfire.  The subject continued to drive recklessly through the parking lot and eventually crashed into a parked semi trailer on the south side of the business.  The subject bailed from the vehicle and fled on foot.  He was immediately captured and was transported to a local hospital with non life threatening injuries.  The female was not injured and has been detained for questioning.  No deputies were injured.

Further details will be released as they become available.
