Wrong-Way Scooter Strikes Parked Patrol Vehicle - Update #1
Tuesday, October 29, 2013

The crash victim is Ryan Seals (DOB 1-17-82) of 19113 Cypress View Drive, Fort Myers.

(Initial press release from October 29 at 6:38 a.m.)

The driver of a motor scooter suffered serious injuries early this morning when he collided with a parked patrol car.

At approximately 2:00 a.m., a Lee County sheriff's deputy was parked in the center median at the base of the Edison Bridge observing northbound traffic.  The deputy's marked patrol car had its parking lights illuminated.  Suddenly, a motor scooter struck the patrol car's side mirror.  The driver was ejected from the scooter, sliding 108 feet before coming to a final rest.  The driver, who was not wearing a helmet, was rushed to the hospital with a serious head injury.

The preliminary investigation shows the scooter was going the wrong way on the Edison Bridge, travelling northbound in the southbound lanes. The headlamp to the scooter was not illuminated and the switch to the headlamp was in the "off" position.  The investigation also shows the scooter driver's blood alcohol content was .280...three and a half times the legal limit.

The investigation continues.
