Highway Interdiction Unit Intercepts Counterfeiters
Friday, June 14, 2013

Credit card counterfeiters travelling from Tampa to Miami found out once again the buck stops in Lee County.

On June 13, 2013, the Lee County Sheriff's Office Highway Interdiction Unit was on marked patrol along Interstate 75 when a detective performed a traffic stop on a speeding vehicle.  While obtaining paperwork from the driver, the detective observed numerous shopping bags in the vehicle stuffed with cartons of cigarettes and baby clothes.  Detectives spoke with the driver and one of the passengers separately and were given conflicting stories about the nature of their business in Tampa.  Due to the suspicious nature of the situation, detectives requested to search the vehicle and the driver consented.

Detectives located approximately $3,700 worth of high end liquor, cigarettes and household goods throughout the car and in the trunk complete with receipts from Lee County businesses including Target, Walgreens, Publix and Sweet Bay supermarkets.  Detectives also discovered forty-nine (49) cards that had the appearance of gift cards.  Further investigation, however, revealed that the cards were all counterfeit.

Yoandy Alvarez Suarez, DOB 2-5-86; Carlos Fleitas, DOB 11-16-86 and Madelyn Suarez Diaz, DOB 9-11-85, all from Hialeah, were arrested and charged with Trafficking in counterfeit credit cards.
