For the second time in a row, law enforcement Sergeants of the Lee County Sheriff's Office have voted to decertify the International Union of Police Associations (IUPA) as their bargaining unit. The vote to decertify was by a nearly two to one margin (46 voted to decertify, 24 against and 13 did not vote). The re-vote was ordered by the Public Employees Relations Commission (PERC) and the results mirror the election results of July, 2012 when 65% of sergeants voted to dissolve the union.
In reacting to the election results, Sheriff Mike Scott stated, "By virtue of their rank, this particular group has been around the agency for a while and demonstrated great leadership abilities. Obviously, they considered all factors to this issue and have now twice made the decision to cast IUPA aside. It is a shame the union did not respect the decision of this group the first time around. The suggestion that their first vote to decertify was flawed has been answered in resounding fashion today."
