West District Captain Herterick Bio
Captain Matthew Herterick began his career at the Lee County Sheriff’s Office in 1999 as a Patrol Deputy after moving here from Rhode Island in 1996. Prior assignments include working as a School Resource Officer and DARE instructor where he developed his passion for working with and helping children.
Captain Herterick also was part of the Sex Offender Unit where he was responsible for monitoring sexual offenders. This led to his promotion to Detective within Major Crimes (Special Victim’s Unit) where he investigated sexually based crimes against children and adults. He later returned to Patrol as a Shift and CID Sergeant. Upon his promotion to Lieutenant, he became the Assistant Commander of the Island Coastal District (Gulf District).
Captain Herterick was a member of the Special Operations Unit from 2004-2015 where he was an Assistant Team Leader, a Sniper and a member of the Explosive Breaching Team. He is a graduate of the International Association of Chiefs of Police Leadership in Police Organizations Academy and Hathcock Sniper School, and has taken advanced classes in Intelligence Led Policing and Crisis Intervention Team training. He also served in the Army National Guard from 1996-2001 as an Intelligence Analyst where he obtained Top Secret Clearance.
When not at work, Captain Herterick enjoys spending time with family and coaching little league baseball.
